The image of how you remember Chicago probably is something like a forest of skyscrapers in back, lake in front, Sears Tower (rather, Willis Tower) prominent in the middle. But, have you ever thought of looking at the skyline with railroad yards in the foreground, and understanding how they came to develop this great city?
That’s our point, there’s always more to this town. Even more than looking at a reflection of the skyline in The Bean in Millenium Park, or looking along the Chicago River. Like, whoever thought of looking at Chicago as a bridge that doesn’t go anywhere?
Or, what about an historic boathouse designed by a Canadian Architect that’s no where near Lake Michigan?
That’s where Learn About Chicago comes in. We know this town. We know the history of this town, and we know its buildings, its architects and its events.
Learn About Chicago is where you can, well … learn about Chicago. From a tailor made walking or bus tour to an academic presentation, to a program of events custom made for a corporate group or university class. And logistics. We’ve done it. And we know it.
Your host, Darrel G. Babuk, AIA is a well known Chicago historian and speaker, presenting the facts from a unique viewpoint of someone who actually grew up in a setting not terribly unlike pre-fire Chicago. He has been featured on radio and assisted in television programming; he is a sought after, invited speaker at events like Great Chicago Places and Spaces and groups like the Chicago Architecture Foundation.
He is a popular speaker to visiting out-of-town university groups; he has made presentations about Chicago’s architecture to student and faculty groups from the United States, Canada, France and Germany. He has also organized larger, multi-functioned events like international student design charettes. One such event, the Student Design Charette of “Celebrate Cardinal – A Retrospective” and “Canadian Architecture in Chicago Week”, attracted students from six Canadian and two Chicago universities; it made print in the Canadian Architect magazine.
And not just for students, he has made researched, targeted presentations about Chicago’s architecture and construction market to groups of visiting professionals from those same countries. Past examples have been been presentations to visiting international building code officials describing the differences between their building codes and codes found in the Chicago area; on another occasions, tour presentations have been given to groups of visiting European architects and contractors describing the Chicago market.
Many of these presentations can be found within the posts on The Babuk Report.
Darrel Babuk and his presentations are just what your itinerary needs to really understand, and even enjoy – Chicago.
