About The Babuk Lounge

Darrel Babuk

Hello. I’m Darrel, the Maître’d and Chief Mixologist here at the Babuk Lounge. Though I grew up in the railroad station of a small town on the Canadian Prairies, that era of unbridled optimism left an impression on me.

Impressions like my older brother’s taste in cars – Renaults, Volkswagens and Pontiac Tempests, and my sister’s predilection for the British invasion. I also loved the British Supermarionation television shows like Fireball XL5 and Thunderbirds.  I really wanted to grow up to be Steve Zodiac on Fireball XL5.

I’ve been fascinated by the built environment since I was a boy. Growing up around trains and travel brochures, I’ve also been fascinated by how people get from place to place. I’ve lived in some very large cities like Washington DC and Chicago, just as I’m at home in some decidedly smaller places. They’ve all caught my imagination in many ways.

That imaginative interpretation of architecture, transportation, urban planning and pop culture is what I mix up here in the Babuk Lounge. I piece together stories that challenge your imagination and optimism.

Stories that leave an impression.

Like that time I took my brother’s senior year undergraduate engineering research paper and turned it into my eighth grade science fair project. Sometimes, perhaps, a bit irreverent.
